Pixar Exhibition at Science Centre... Honestly.. Don't bother

The 20 Years of Pixar Animation Exhibition (the website is a fail btw, its created by the bugs from Its a Bugs Life) is currently on at the Science Centre till 27th June.

What do you mean you have never heard of Pixar? What planet do you come from? Did you not download go cinemas and watch movies like Toy Story 1 and 2, Cars, the not so incredible The Incredibles, but still good, Wall-E, Up among others?

I, for one, is looking forward to the upcoming Toy Story 3.

But as much as their movies are always top notch and fantastic, this exhibition is a let down, yes you heard me.. This exhibition is not worth the $20 ticket price...

If you have to ask, yes, that's an early concept of Woody from Toy Story on the ticket

The whole exhibition is just displays of concept art and drawings of the different Pixar Characters

Another early concept art of Woody.

Wanna take a guess which character is the above movement art depicting?

Just black and white and sometimes coloured drawings. There are also clay molds of the characters on display....The only possibly interesting thing from the exhibition is a display that moves really fast in a circle that when rotated at a very fast speed and viewed under certain lightings, the characters come to life...

I cannot remember what it is called...xeno zeno... ok nevermind...

Ok you probably can't see it from the picture , but it is impressive.... All the Pixar chracters move in unison...

Ok other then that, it was a really disappointing exhibition. Disjointed is another word I would use. Walk into a section of Wall-E then to Monsters Inc...you will find yourself walking into another section talking about Wall-E, really messy..

One thing they totally missed out is the references to their other movies... Like the Pizza Planet Truck that appears on all the movies..

The above Pixar truck appeared in all Pixar movies... They should have a Did You Know section that should showcase the different easter eggs in Pixar movies...

Like how the new Toy Story 3 character Lots-O-Hugging bear also appeared in Up...bet alot of peeps dint know that....

One of the beauty of Pixar movies, on top of the imagination, story line and graphics, is the recurring references that makes Pixar movies fun to watch over and over again..

I, for one, always sit up straight watching Pixar movies in the cinema, trying to concentrate on the story line at the same time spotting the references...

A very important point the Pixar Exhibition failed to bring up..

The exhibition ended with some displays of local animation works from some polytechnic and school, which is a bad move, as it makes their work look like some cheap rip off...

In all honesty you get more information and fun watching the extras in the R1 DVDs compared to this exhibition...yes I think its a waste of time....

Well to end it off.. here is a quote from John Lasseter..

I totally agree with you and I actually blogged about it the same way. I was excited that this kind of ehibit shall be brought to SG, but they have to do much better to impress crowds !

If you want to blame anything, it's the advertising. I felt it was rather hyped up, so most people didn't understand. It's like "It's Pixar! Wee!!" and then when people go, they get all disappointed they aren't seeing some pretty polished product. *sigh*

In my opinion the exhibit's more for the animators in singapore and the budding 3D animation industry. It's a behind the scenes type of thing and it's definitely not all guts and glory. It's actually rather darned boring most of the time, and it's years of hard work and lost time with loved ones. Every single thing, even little stick figures, is an exploration to further push a character, its animation and the set, else they'll just end up as blah normal stuff that don't make sense at all. Then who's going to complain eh? They're just displaying what they did, that's what a exhibition is for.

BTW Easter eggs are really an afterthought compared to the basics, or just a simple reuse of assets. It's easy to bring into a scene and rearrange something you already got rather than to spend time (which means money) making something else like it to put there. So it's highly unlikely they're going to make a space for Easter eggs, really... despite the fact that it's very interesting to the audiences.

I think one often sees the final animated work and forgets about the many unseen heros behind the scenes. This exhibition pays tributes to the many artists that made the final animation a reality. I have to agree that more pieces of artworks could be put up and the 'do you know' or 'have you notice' section may be more interactive rather than the few computer screens showing interviews. But you cannot deny the artworks are stunning, showing the process and development of a character. And yes, I skipped the end part showing our local 'talents' cos they are just such disappointment. Animation is not just about learning 3D softwares. It takes years of hardwork to learn the art of animation.

By the way, I am disappointed that you have ignored the 'NO PHOTOGRAPHY' signs and took photos and even put it up on your blog. I think if we love Pixar for what they have done, we should respect their rights for protecting their intellectual property.
