Movie Review : The Storm Warriors 风云II

This is probably my first attempt at a movie review. If I fail miserably.. blame the movie, not me.

Now let me just say I have never had so much anticipation for a Chinese movie. The first movie Storm Riders was 10 years ago. It was probably the best Chinese movie of that time, with special effects and fighting scenes never before used and seen in a Chinese movie.

It stayed somewhat true to the comic, Aaron Kwok and Ekin Cheng was probably born to play the roles of Wind and Cloud respectively.

Last time we don't ink tattoos... we burn them in.

So fast forward to ten years later, present time 2009 after much budget discussion and deliberations and the blue dye on Cloud's hair gone... The sequel was born thus the Storm Warriors.

This sequel was directed by the Pang brothers, mostly known for their work on horror movies oh and one Bangkok Dangerous. So with much expectations I finally got into the cinema to watch the Storm Warriors.

Was I disappointed? Yes and No.

There wasn't much of a story line, heck there wasn't much talking as well. It was basically a show full of CGI effects, endless fighting and swordplay compared to the first one. I don't even know if it was a continuation of the first one.

Looks like it, then again if you missed the first one, you probably won't be able to know the diff.

I will strike the pose on the right from now everytime I attend a meeting

Or maybe this pose when I wanna make a point.

The story starts off with Lord Godless (such a fierce name, one I will call my son, Godless Loh) taking over China with his son, capturing Cloud and his lover Chu Chu ( Dont get me started on her and how irritating she is) then in comes Wind to the rescue but failed. Even Wu Ming with his Wan Jian Gui Zhong 万剑归中 also failed miserably.

Wan Jian Gui Zhong : This guy will be useful in a BBQ when replacing the swords with skewers.

Then the movie went into a mess. With Wind learning the ways of the Devil and losing control of himself going beserk and Cloud learning the ways of the BBQ skewering skills.

Once Wind and Cloud defeated Lord Godless, the movie went into a half hour or maybe more frenzy of Wind and Cloud going on and one with one another. Which ended in a manner to pave way for possible part three.

Don't wanna give it all away yah.....Let's just say it's an ending which fans may possibly relate to.

When Wind becomes Satan. See the resemblance?

I remember reading in an interview when Ekin Cheng asked the Pang brothers about portraying Wind as the devil. Pang brothers said just leave it to us to portray it.

The boy from Ju On was the result.

The Yes part of me enjoying the movie other then watching it with my old half is that it was somewhat bringing the comic to life. Yes the part when Ekin became the Devil and becoming beserk, Wu Ming's short but powerful appearance and of course the 2 swords.

The No part of me is too much CGI, too much fighting, too little of a storyline. Even the girls in the movie was redundant. Heck I did not see much of 风神腿  or  骐磷臂 or 排云掌

That being said only watch if you are fan, or unless you are dragged by the hair and forced by gun point by your other half to watch it.... and lower your expectations.

Stars : 6 / 10 (which I already think its too high)

Oh the other saving grace was the MTV which was sung by both leads. I enjoyed it though.

Well if you read the comics, you will be disappointed also. Fengshen tui and Paiyun zhang practically became the lowest-level of the low-level skills as the comic progresses. Xiongba in his heydays will look like a commoner too – you know, the type powerful guys just anyhow shove aside and kick.

@eevonng @darkholme @victortan watched it yesterday in JB! Really not much of a storyline! But I must say the fighting sequences were good and that the pace of the movie was good such that we were on tenterhooks even though there was not much of a storyline. I'd call it a "feel good" "kill time because there's nothing else to do" show. :)
